Meet the Artist

Hishani is a Toronto-based artist with a self-created technique: painting with ice. This unique method of working with frozen acrylic ice allows her to enjoy the process of creating rather than the end result. Her main inspiration has always been the human form and capturing its subtle sensations.

Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, she immigrated to Toronto with her mother and sister to join her father. Growing up with a passion for the visual arts led her to York University, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts. It was during this time that she created this unique technique. Hishani is currently continuing her vibrant exploration of acrylic paintings using ice while living the life of an artist.

Artist Statement

My practice explores the intersection of intentionality and environmental chance. By utilizing ice as a primary medium, I surrender the traditional control of the first mark, allowing the natural melting process to dictate the initial flow of pigment. This method requires disciplined patience, shifting the artist’s role from creator to collaborator with the elements. My work intentionally obscures the full composition, inviting the viewer to engage in an act of visual completion. By leaving space for individual interpretation, the final narrative of each piece belongs to the observer, making the act of viewing a deeply personal and creative contribution to the work itself.
